The Artists:

Ann Hutchins:

Ann began serious watercolor painting in 2012, when she set aside her drafting pencil as a landscape designer and began taking classes at the Des Moines Art Center from Melinda Kabel, who has become Ann’s friend and art challenger. There, Ann has met a tribe of artists from whom she has learned invaluable watercolor lessons and the ability to share in return. Other watercolor exploration has come from workshops offered by the Iowa Watercolor Society and Peninsula School of Art.

Mary Johnson:

Mary began painting around 20 years ago, but put her paints away when family needs increased.  She has always loved watercolors. Mary appreciates the fluidity and freedom that creates the beauty of watercolor.  Each layer of color adds excitement to the work that can’t be duplicated. Now that her children are grown, Mary has been able to start painting again in watercolor as well as creating art with charcoal and pastels.

Melinda Kabel:

Melinda has always made art, from early childhood on to the present. The earliest, formal, watercolor instruction came in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Taking classes at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Melinda was a watercolor instructor at the Des Moines Art Center. Melinda hopes that viewers of this show, will keep in mind, that we should never be static but be ever-moving forward, continuing to experience new things about ourselves and this beautiful world we are a part of.

Vicky Prosser:

Vicky has loved painting and drawing for as long as she can remember. She has been a practicing pharmacist for 30 years, and that has been an important part of her life, but there has always been a place in her heart for painting. Vicky has been privileged to be instructed for many years by Melinda Kabel.  Any success that comes out of Vicky’s art has been helped along largely by Melinda.  The friendships that have developed through their love of watercolor painting has been a blessing.  Vicky hopes that one of her paintings brings a little of that happiness to you.
