    Artist’s Statement:

Robert Prosperi states: “Watercolor is a game with four players … paint, paper, water and artist.  What are the rules for this game and who makes them?  Water, paint and paper make the rules. It’s the artist’s job to interpret those rules and use them to turn the game into his vision.  Each of the first three players has their own properties which can make an effect on the outcome.”

Robert found an interest in watercolor painting while in college studying architecture.  After retirement, he had the freedom to turn his creative interests back to what he most enjoyed.  To refresh his skills, Robert began classes from a skilled watercolor artist at The Des Moines Art Center, once again finding good instruction and the discipline that is required by this medium.

The things that he finds of interest as topics for his paintings are images that contain dynamic, natural elements.  Water adds life and movement to a painting, whether it is a large tumultuous ocean, a shifting shoreline or reflecting pool.  He also finds this same quality in the man-made world.  The inventions that move us, such as ships and railroad equipment, have also become the topics of his paintings.  Old barns and deserted structures have a story to tell.  They have been touched by someone, in their construction, in their life, and in their abandonment.  Even historic landmarks are dynamic.  They are the road-marks that bring us to where we are today.

Robert starts each new painting with confidence and a little fear. “It takes very little to ruin a painting.  I pay constant attention to technique and vision to successfully put the image I have in mind on paper. Done well, the rewards are gratifying.”
